The three questions Electricians ask:
How Many Hours? Only TCP and CREE manufacture long-lasting 25,000 Hour dimmable bulbs: almost twice the life of GE (15000 Hour), Sylvania (15000 Hour), EcoSmart (15000 Hour) and '3rd-tier' brands (10000 Hour).
Is it Energy-Star Certified? With a cheap LED, color degradation over time (grey hue) is the norm. Bulbs which are Energy-Star Certified have been tested by the Energy Protection Agency for color consistency and color accuracy: 25+ specifications and stress tests.
Is it Rated for Enclosed Fixtures? A 60-Watt Equivalent LED operating in a totally open air environment heats to 185° F and in an enclosed fixture 230° to 280° F. Due to their diminished (or non-existent) heat sink, a cheap LED won't tolerate heat. Use a lamp shade and its lifespan can be cut in half. Put one in porch light and it can fry. Place inside a ceiling-mounted enclosed fixture and set a timer for when failure will occur. With the public accustom to an incandescent mindset in which bulbs are more-or-less the same, junk LEDs have taken root. To remain price competitive, Cree, GE and EcoSmart degraded their bulbs (see image) to the extent their bulbs are no longer sufficiently heat resistant to be rated for enclosed fixtures. LEDs are sensitive to heat. Bulbs which are Rated for Enclosed Fixtures have been certified to resist heat.
Quality: Consumer Reports Best Buy ~ 25000 hours ~ 22.8 years ~ Rated for Enclosed Fixtures ~ Energy Star Certified
Savings: Estimated Energy Cost of $1.20 per year @ 3 hrs per day where an Incandescent bulb soaks up $7.20 worth of energy. $7.20 - $1.20 = $6.00 energy savings per bulb per year over Incandescent. This bulb pays for itself within 6 months! Not only that, it takes 12 incandescent bulbs to match this bulb's lifespan of 22.8 years. On both counts, a phenomenal return on investment.
